What is a coach and what is a healing practitioner?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as the following: “Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching isn’t consulting. It isn’t mentoring. It isn’t therapy. Coaches are not aimed to fix you. Coaches don’t give advice or have agendas. Coaches know that the client is the expert in their life and that they have all their own answers. Coaches support and uplift clients to live out their truth for themselves.
Healing practitioner is a broad term used to describe a person using a wide variety of modalities to help people heal their heart and pain. Some healing practitioners might use touch (e.g. Reiki), but I do not. Some modalities I use include raising awareness to the energies and emotions in the body, visualizations, grounding, centering, creative meditations, dreamwork and using empowerment statements to shift energy blocks, give voice to your inner knowing and bring in self-love.
What will we do in coaching/healing sessions?
Some sessions might feel more coaching based and others might feel more healing based. Coaching and healing techniques can be used to examine old energy patterns and open space to bring in self-compassion, self- forgiveness and self-love. We may use meditation, grounding, centering, visualization, empowering questions, inner child work, collaborative conversations, dreamwork and exploring emotional and energy blocks during our sessions to find and bring voice to your inner knowing. A sense of spirituality and trust (however it looks for you) is sprinkled throughout the sessions.
How many sessions do I need?
As many as you feel benefit you. With consistency, more results are experienced. I am not to say how many sessions you need to feel supported. You know this for yourself or it will become clear for you either during or outside of our sessions.
Is Holistic Coaching and Integrative Healing like therapy?
No. I love therapy. But, I am not a talk therapist and my work is not therapy. My coaching work can be a wonderful complement to traditional therapy, but in no means replaces the work of a licensed therapist. I do not offer advice or hold your answers. Our work together helps you get to your own answers.
Along that note, coaching is not to be used as a substitute for professional advice on financial, business or medical matters either.
You’re a Speech Therapist. Do you do talk therapy?
No. Speech therapy is not the same as talk therapy. Speech therapists (also called Speech Language Pathologists) are defined by ASHA as professionals who “ work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults”.
I really love therapy. But, I am not a talk therapist and my work is not therapy that one would receive from a LCSW, LMFT, LPC etc.
Although I am trained to provide diagnosis in speech disorders, I do not provide diagnosis in my consultation. Speech consultation cannot be used in place of an official speech disorder diagnosis or in place of medical advice.
What is a Social Story™?
I write “Social Stories” ™️ as a support to help children understand what to expect in upcoming social events (e.g. Halloween party, doctor’s visit), activities (e.g. swimming) or transitions (e.g. new house, new baby, new school). A Social Story ™ is best read before the event in a calm time in which it can be easily processed. Some kids may enjoy reading it multiple times. While children of all ages may benefit from a Social Story™, others may not want to read it. This is ok. Note that Social Stories™ do not state that children “must” do something or assume children “will” feel a certain way. Instead, they give kids an idea of what to expect in a social situation and may provide ideas on how they can feel comfortable during a social event or during a big change. Note that Social Story™ is a registered trademark owned by Carol Gray. I have attended Carol Gray’s training in the specific methods of Social Story ™ interventions.
Do you need to see my child in person to do a speech consultation?
Speech consultation and Speech Therapy can happen completely online. With speech consultation, I can offer more insight and coaching on how to support your child at home and inform you of any other next steps that could benefit them. If you feel strongly that I meet your child in person, let’s talk first to get more information.
